I am in the process of preparing for our annual Open House. Each year, I try to find a way to fit the most important information into the eight minutes or so that we get with each group of parents. I normally cover my grading policy, discipline plan, uniforms, and other things listed in my handbook. This year, I would like to try something different. I am tired of feeling that I am reading things to other adults that they have already read.
This year, I plan to talk about things parents can do at home to help their child be more successful in my class. Most parents know how to help with math or history, but have no clue how to help with the bassoon! Here is an excerpt from a handout I give to parents:
1. Ask them to perform for you. Students will work harder, and be proud of their work when a parent is interested in what they are doing.
2. Consider learning the instrument with your child. This can be fun for you, and good for your student. Have him/her teach you what they learn in class each day. This will only take about 20 minutes each night, and will reinforce what they are learning in class. Even if you are unable to do this, ask your child what they did in class each day.
3. Keep up-to-date on all band events and deadlines. All of this information is available on the band website, and in weekly emails or newsletters from the teacher.
4. Make sure your child’s instrument is in good working condition. If he/she thinks something is wrong, have them bring it to the teacher. Sometimes repair work is necessary. An instrument that is not working properly can frustrate students and cause bad habits.
5. Make sure your child has the proper supplies for the instrument (reeds, valve oil, etc…). This can prevent many other problems.
6. Ask to see his/her band notebook. A current copy of the musicianship test should always be in there, so you can see his/her progress.
7. Come see every concert, and bring lots of family and friends! Nothing is more encouraging for music students then a large audience of familiar people.
8. Make sure your child is practicing – guidelines and suggested practice times are listed in the band handbook.
I think this will be a much better use of the small amount of time. If you have anything to add to this, please tell me in the comment section.
