Welcome to teachingband.com, my blog about teaching band. My name is Mike, and I am a middle school band director (by choice...). I am in my eighth year teaching. While I was in college, I really wanted to teach high school band. After an incredible internship experience in a middle school, however, I decided that I would like to teach middle school. I like the fact that I get to start them from the very beginning, and their (the students) success is largely dependent on me. Often times in a high school situation, success depends on the middle school band program.
When I graduated, like most people I thought that I learned everything I needed to know to be successful. Fortunately, I figured out early on that I was incorrect. I spend a great deal of time talking to other band teachers, observing them teach and asking them questions. Most of what I have learned and do comes from other band directors who have shared what they know with me. That is why I wanted to start a blog.
I am not sure exactly what I am going to post on here yet, but I think it is a great way for me to share my experiences and what I have learned. I also plan to share things I use in my classes: scale sheets, worksheets, etc... Please feel free to take whatever you want.
